The African Leadership Academy (ALA) is dedicated to identifying and nurturing the next generation of African leaders. The admissions process for ALA’s 2025 intake is carefully designed to assess candidates’ leadership potential, academic readiness, and overall compatibility with the Academy’s unique and rigorous diploma program. ALA’s holistic approach considers multiple factors, ensuring that each candidate is evaluated as an individual, with a focus on their unique strengths and potential contributions to the Academy’s diverse community.

Overview of the Selection Criteria

ALA seeks to build a class of students from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, understanding that diversity is essential to community strength and the cultivation of leadership. The selection process does not hinge on any single factor, apart from age; for the 2025 intake, applicants must have been born on or after September 1, 2004. The following criteria are central to the selection process:

1. Intellectual Readiness

ALA students are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence and intellectual growth. This criterion evaluates whether a candidate is excited about learning, willing to push the boundaries of their understanding, and ready to thrive in ALA’s challenging curriculum.

  • Academic Achievement: Candidates should exhibit strong academic performance in their secondary education, showing consistent improvement and a drive to excel. High standards in academics provide confidence that the student can handle the rigorous demands of ALA’s curriculum.
  • Intellectual Curiosity: ALA values students who are intellectually curious and eager to learn beyond the confines of the classroom. These students seek learning opportunities in all aspects of life, delight in solving unfamiliar problems, and aspire to be lifelong learners.
  • Critical Thinking: Candidates must demonstrate the ability to analyze and break down complex problems, applying critical thinking skills both in and out of the classroom.

2. Courage & Perseverance

This criterion focuses on the candidate’s initiative, resilience, and ability to persevere in the face of challenges. ALA students are expected to have the courage to take on difficult tasks and the perseverance to see them through to completion.

  • Initiative: ALA students are proactive and have the courage to tackle difficult tasks that they believe are important. They are not easily deterred by obstacles and are willing to step out of their comfort zones.
  • Follow-Through: Perseverance is key; ALA students do not give up easily. They are resilient, facing setbacks with determination and learning from failures.
  • Self-Driven: ALA values students who take ownership of their learning and leadership journey, acting independently and with a strong internal motivation rather than waiting for instructions from others.

3. Ownership

ALA seeks students who are ambitious and have a genuine desire to make a positive impact on the world. This criterion assesses the candidate’s commitment to effecting change and their passion for contributing to Africa’s future.

  • Ambition: ALA students are big dreamers. They set high goals and work diligently to achieve them, pushing themselves to reach their full potential.
  • Commitment to Positive Change: Candidates should have a commitment to making a positive impact, aspiring to lives of significance where they are remembered for their contributions to others and their communities.
  • Passion for Africa: ALA students are passionate about Africa and aspire to play a role in the continent’s advancement, understanding their responsibility as emerging leaders.
