The Academy Scholars Program of The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is an esteemed initiative aimed at nurturing exceptional scholars at the beginning of their academic journeys. This program seeks individuals whose research exemplifies excellence in social science disciplines and demonstrates a profound understanding of regions and languages outside the United States or Canada. Scholars whose work bridges traditional academic boundaries, offering insights into comparative, transnational, or domestic issues, both historical and contemporary, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Program Overview
Academy Scholars are a distinguished community characterized by resourcefulness, initiative, and originality. Their scholarly work is seen as the cornerstone for future careers in research universities or international institutions. Selected scholars are appointed for a two-year in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA. During their tenure, they receive substantial financial and research support, enabling them to undertake comprehensive research projects and advance their skills in their chosen fields and areas.
Fellowship Experience
The fellowship provides a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment. Academy Scholars engage in a variety of academic activities including dinners, seminars, and informal gatherings designed to foster innovative interdisciplinary approaches. Mentorship is a key component of the program, with Harvard Academy Senior Scholars—a group of faculty members—offering guidance, participating in events, and supporting the Scholars’ academic and professional development.

Eligibility
The Academy Scholars Program is open to:
- Recent PhD recipients and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences.
- Individuals who have received their PhD or comparable doctoral degree within two years of the August 1, 2025, start date.
- Advanced doctoral candidates who must provide degree conferral documentation by June 30, 2025.
Applicants who have previously held or completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible.
Terms and Conditions
Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are selected for two-year in-residence appointments. The fellowship offers an annual stipend of $80,000, with the two years to be completed within a three-year window. The first year of the fellowship must commence by the fall immediately following the offer. Delays or deferrals in starting the fellowship are not permitted.
Academy Scholars can apply for a one-time leave of up to 12 months between the first and second years, specifically to accept or continue tenure-track teaching appointments. No other reasons for leave are accepted. During the fellowship, Scholars are not allowed to accept additional funding, awards, or obligations.
Application Process
All application materials must be submitted by September 20, 2024. Late applications are not accepted. The application consists of the following components:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including a list of publications.
- Research Proposal: A maximum of 2,000 words detailing intellectual objectives, planned methodologies, and disciplinary work.
- Scholarly Writing Sample: A PhD dissertation chapter or single-authored peer-reviewed journal article, up to 50 pages in English.
- PhD Program Transcript: A copy of the transcript from your PhD program.
- Three Letters of Recommendation: These must be uploaded directly and confidentially by the recommenders by the application deadline.
All parts of the application, including the letters of recommendation, must be submitted online as PDF documents via The Harvard Academy’s website by clicking the “APPLY ONLINE” button.

Additional Information
- Research Proposal: Footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies are optional and do not count toward the 2,000-word maximum.
- Transcripts from Foreign Universities: Applicants should provide as much official transcript documentation as possible for all graduate work. Institutions frequently receive such requests and can supply the necessary paperwork.
