Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Age:
- Must be between 25 and 35 years old by the application deadline.
- Exceptional applicants aged 21-24 will also be considered.
- Language Proficiency:
- Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English. Additional support is available for applicants who are deaf.
- Citizenship:
- Must be a citizen of one of the following African countries:
- Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
- Must be a citizen of one of the following African countries:

Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on the following factors (not in any particular order):
- Leadership Record:
- Demonstrated achievements in business, civic engagement, or public service.
- Community Service:
- Proven commitment to public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
- Cooperation Skills:
- Ability to work effectively in diverse groups and respect for different opinions.
- Communication Skills:
- Strong social and communication abilities.
- Attitude:
- An energetic and positive demeanor.
- Professional Experience:
- Relevant knowledge and experience in the applicant’s preferred sector (business, civic engagement, or public management).
- Future Commitment:
- A clear plan to return to Africa and apply the skills and training acquired to benefit their community or country.
