About the Fellowship
The Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, funded by the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies, supports advanced education and research at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Established in memory of Izaak Walton Killam by his wife Dorothy Johnston Killam, the fellowship aims to nurture scholars likely to contribute significantly to their fields or gain professional distinction. Recipients should demonstrate not only intellectual excellence but also sound character.
Fellowship Details
- Annual Stipend: $60,000 (for up to two years).
- Travel and Research Allowance: Discontinued for future recipients.
- Number of Awards: 3-5 new fellowships are awarded annually.
Application and Nomination Deadlines
- Applicants: Check with your proposed UBC department or unit for specific internal deadlines.
- Department/Unit Nomination Deadline: November 9, 2023, at 4:00 PM PT.
Eligibility Requirements
- PhD Completion: Must have completed all PhD requirements within 24 months prior to the anticipated fellowship start date. The completion date refers to the date all steps required for the degree are finished, not the convocation date.
- Interruption Extensions: Eligibility period can be extended for career interruptions due to childrearing, illness, or health-related family responsibilities. The extension is limited to the duration of the interruption, up to one year.
- Prior UBC Studies: Applicants must not have pursued PhD-level studies at any UBC campus.
- Current UBC Postdoc Appointments: If already holding a UBC postdoctoral appointment, applicants must provide a rationale for continuing at UBC.
- Faculty Position: Applicants must not currently hold a tenure-track or continuing faculty position. Temporary, term, or non-tenure track faculty positions are eligible.
- Citizenship: Open to citizens of any country. Successful candidates must meet Canadian immigration requirements and be based at UBC, except for research trips (limited to three months per year).

Proposed Supervisor Requirements
- The supervisor must be a continuing faculty member with a tenure-track appointment at UBC.
- The supervisor must commit to overseeing the applicant’s research for the full 24 months.
Evaluation Criteria
- Scholarly Work and Research Independence (60%)
- Quality of research contributions to date.
- Scholarships and awards.
- Duration of graduate studies considering program nature and personal circumstances.
- Ability to complete projects timely, demonstrating critical thinking, judgment, and initiative.
- Resilience and adaptability in research plans, particularly due to COVID-19 impacts.
- Quality of Proposed Research Project (30%)
- Originality and significance of the research agenda.
- Merit, potential impact, and feasibility of the project.
- Relevance of the applicant’s background to the proposed research.
- Suitability of the research environment (supervisor, facilities, academic support).
- Personal Qualities (10%)
- Integrity, collegiality, respect for others.
- Communication skills.
- Leadership abilities, evidenced by employment, achievements, community engagement, and volunteering.

- Department/Unit Nomination: Departments or units will submit nominations by November 9, 2023, at 4:00 PM PT.
