Merit Scholarships for International Students at Universität Hamburg
Universität Hamburg offers a merit scholarship program designed to support outstanding international students and doctoral researchers across all subjects and degree levels. This program aims to help recipients focus entirely on their studies by alleviating financial concerns, thereby fostering their academic and personal development.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the merit scholarship, applicants must:
- Enrollment and Study Progress:
- Have been enrolled at Universität Hamburg for at least 2 semesters in their current program.
- Students in 2-year master’s programs and doctoral researchers are eligible to apply after completing 1 semester.
- Citizenship:
- Not hold German citizenship.
- Federal Loan Scheme:
- Not be eligible for the federal student loan scheme.
Funding Details
- Monthly Funding Amount:
- The maximum monthly stipend is €930.
- Individual doctoral researchers may receive up to €1,200 per month, depending on funding availability.
- Duration:
- Scholarships are typically awarded for 2 semesters (12 months).
- Recipients can reapply for additional funding. In exceptional cases, funding may extend up to 3 years.

- Deadline: 15 April
- Funding Period: 1 October – 30 September of the same year
- Fall Application Round:
- Deadline: 15 October
- Funding Period: 1 April – 31 March of the following year
Application Process
- Advising Session:
- It is recommended to have an individual advising session before submitting your application.
- Online Application:
- Access the application form through the provided links for your chosen period.
- Log in using your STiNE ID and register with your student email address.
- Required Documents:
- CV: Include all relevant personal and academic information.
- Letter of Motivation: Use the provided form (PDF).
- Proof of Social/Intercultural Activities: Submit documentation if applicable.
- Record of Achievements:
- Bachelor’s and state examination program students: STiNE printout of “Leistungskonto” or current transcript.
- Master’s and doctoral researchers: Most recent degree certificate with grades (English or German).
- Evaluations: Two evaluations from full-time teaching staff with doctorates at Universität Hamburg. Use the evaluation form (PDF) and refer to the FAQ for detailed instructions.
- Submission:
- Ensure all documents are compiled and ready for upload before the application deadline.
- Submit proof of your residence permit to the program coordinator before the deadline. EU citizens must present their identity card and registration certificate.

Selection Procedure
- Committee Review:
- Scholarships are awarded by a committee comprising faculty members and ASTA (student council) representatives.

- Additional Capabilities: Verifiable achievements such as presentations, publications, prizes, and specialized skills.

Disbursement of Scholarship
- Scholarships are disbursed on the first day of each month during the funding period.
- Funding commences on 1 October for the April application round and 1 April of the following year for the October application round.
- Scholarships cannot be paid into foreign bank accounts, and academic leave is not permitted during the funding period.
