Overview of the INTERACT-Africa Project

The INTERACT-Africa Project, funded by the European Union (EU), focuses on promoting sustainable development through the conversion of organic waste to valuable bioproducts. It emphasizes the fields of Chemistry, Biology, and Information Technology to support climate change mitigation and the development of a sustainable bioeconomy in Africa.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Inclusive Learning Mobility Opportunities:
    • Enhance the capacity building of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through training and education in green Chemistry, Biology, and Information Technology.
    • Develop a skilled workforce capable of implementing sustainable practices.
  2. Fostering Entrepreneurship:
    • Support the establishment of green technology businesses in Africa by providing mentorship, access to funding, and technical support to aspiring entrepreneurs and start-ups.
  3. Facilitating Networking and Knowledge Sharing:
    • Promote innovation and sustainable economic growth through internships, cooperative education programs, and hands-on learning opportunities.

Number of Scholarships and Study Period

  • PhD Scholarships: 5
    • Duration: 36 months
  • Masters Scholarships: 23
    • Duration: 24 months

Target Beneficiaries

  1. Target Group I (TG-I):
    • Students registered/admitted in or having obtained a degree from one of the partner universities: Moi University (Kenya), Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Uganda), Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania), Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), and Institut Facultaire Des Sciences Agronomiques De Yangambi (DRC).
  2. Target Group II (TG-II):
    • Students registered/admitted in or having obtained a degree from a university established in Africa but not included in the partnership, with priority given to students from conflict-affected and disadvantaged countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique, and Algeria.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

  • Meet the minimum admission requirements for the host university.
  • Provide proof of nationality and residency in an eligible African country.
  • Submit a 1-page research concept paper in the intended area of study.
  • Obtain an admission letter from the host university.
  • Declare not having previously benefited from an Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme scholarship (2022-2027).
  • Commit not to benefit from another EU-funded scholarship during the mobility period.
  • Submit a motivation letter reflecting innovative technologies in climate change and mitigation.
  • Provide two recommendation/reference letters (one from an academic advisor or professor/lecturer).
  • Be willing to study outside the home country but within eligible countries.
  • Provide proof of special needs if applicable.
  • Non-English speakers must provide proof of English proficiency (B2 CEFR or equivalent). For Institut Facultaire Des Sciences Agronomiques De Yangambi, proof of French proficiency (B2 or equivalent) is required.

Funding Provided by the European Union

  • Tuition Fees and Research Costs: Covered for the duration of the study.
  • Health and Accident Insurance: Comprehensive coverage provided.
  • Monthly Stipend:
    • PhD students: €1,230, which includes travel costs, visa costs, and a settling allowance.
    • MSc students: €890, which includes travel costs, visa costs, and a settling allowance.
