1. The Fellowship

The AGNES Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme (ECCF) offers talented young people from Kenya a unique opportunity to start their career at the interface between climate science, policy development, and practice. The Fellowship aims to build independent careers in decision-making environments within the climate change learning landscape. Supported by the NDC Delivery Lab, this Fellowship promotes the translation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) into actionable climate solutions.

2. Aim of the Fellowship

The Fellowship aims to cultivate Kenya’s next generation of independent climate leaders with a deep understanding of the climate science-policy-practice nexus. This approach is essential for addressing climate challenges in Africa and Kenya. The objectives of the ECCF programme include:

  • Enabling young professionals to contribute to IPCC processes.
  • Providing a career start on the climate policy-science practice interface.
  • Promoting experiential learning in climate policy and negotiations.
  • Establishing networks of experts for innovative policy and climate action solutions.

3. Number of Fellowships Offered

A maximum of 5 fellowships will be awarded.

4. Eligibility

This Fellowship is for academically outstanding young professionals who aspire to be climate and environmental leaders at the science-policy-practice nexus. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of Kenya, not more than 28 years old, and hold at least a bachelor’s degree from any field at the time of application.
  • Be an early career researcher with no more than two years since completing their degree at the time of application.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Creativity, innovation, and critical thinking are essential for participating in the programme.
  • Be highly motivated to work and ready to learn in a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment.

Applicants currently employed are eligible to apply but must provide evidence of their employer’s willingness to grant permission for the Fellowship duration. They should display a clear interest in the interface between science, policy, and practice.

5. Benefits

A fellowship stipend will be paid to the selected Fellows as per the AGNES’ Human Resources Manual.

6. Application Procedure

A complete application package must include:

  1. Cover Letter: Maximum 1 page, outlining how your qualifications and career goals align with the ECCF programme requirements.
  2. CV: Maximum 2 pages.
  3. Academic Transcripts/Degree Certificates: Copies of all academic records to date.

7. Duration and Start of Fellowship

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Start Date: July 1, 2024
  • End Date: December 31, 2024
  • Commitment: Full-time participation
