In honor of Dr. Cecil Renaud’s enduring commitment to education and philanthropy, The Cecil Renaud Educational and Charitable Trust was established in 1988. Dr. Renaud’s visionary spirit continues to shape the landscape of educational opportunities, even after his passing on 3 June 1993, as he bequeathed the residue of his estate to the Trust.
A significant milestone in the Trust’s journey was the establishment of the Overseas Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship, awarded annually, serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for one or two exceptional students. It provides the means for post-graduate study, including Masters degrees or PhDs, in the United Kingdom at a university of the student’s choice.

Since its inception in 1994, the Cecil Renaud Overseas Scholarship has transformed the lives of 38 of South Africa’s most promising talents. These scholars have ventured to esteemed institutions such as the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, and the University of London, pursuing diverse fields of study across the academic spectrum.

CRITERIA:
- Academic Excellence: We seek applicants who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, aiming for or achieving undergraduate or Honours degree(s) cum laude or summa cum laude. Additionally, candidates should have received Dean’s Commendations, Certificates of Merit, or equivalent honors.
- Impactful Leadership: We are looking for individuals who have the potential to make a significant impact in their field of study and beyond, demonstrating leadership qualities and a commitment to positive change.
- Secondary Schooling in KZN: Applicants must have completed a significant portion of their secondary education in KwaZulu-Natal and be under the age of 27 at the time of applying for the scholarship.
- Studying at a South African University: The scholarship is open to postgraduate students who have completed or are currently studying towards an Honours degree or a four-year undergraduate degree at a South African university.
- Evidence of Engagement and Leadership: A strong track record in extracurricular activities, along with a drive to succeed and contribute to the advancement of South Africa, is essential.
- Any Field of Study: Former scholars have pursued diverse fields of study, including Development Studies, Applied Theology, Mathematics, and Music.
PAST SCHOLARS:
The scholarship has been awarded to 38 exceptional young South Africans over the past two decades, enabling them to pursue their academic aspirations in the UK. Our alumni have achieved remarkable success in their respective disciplines, with some serving as trustees and selectors for future scholarship recipients.
