Overview: The United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR)’s Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent, initiated by the Anti-Racial Discrimination Section and supported by the UN General Assembly, offers an intensive human rights training in Geneva. Designed for individuals of African descent from the diaspora, the programme aims to enhance participants’ understanding of international human rights law, foster skills in project development, and provide exposure to human rights mechanisms.

Purpose: The programme equips fellows with tools to promote civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of people of African descent. By strengthening legislative development, policy formulation, and collaboration between civil society and governments, participants are empowered to initiate local awareness-raising activities and contribute to systemic change.

Who May Apply:

  • Individuals of African descent living in the diaspora.
  • Minimum of 4 years of work experience related to the rights of People of African Descent.
  • Submission of a letter from an organization certifying their status.
  • Availability to attend the full duration of the programme.

Dates & Location: The programme will take place from 11th to 29th November 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland. Pre-online courses and preparatory assignments are required in the preceding two weeks.

Application Process: Applications can be submitted in English, French, or Spanish and must include:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Completed Application Form
  • Personal Statement (max 500 words)
  • Official Letter certifying status
  • Copy of applicant’s passport

Selection Process: Selection will ensure gender and regional balance and consider the human rights situation of people of African descent in respective countries. Short-listed candidates will be notified.

Participant’s Entitlement: Each fellow receives:

  • Economy class return ticket
  • Basic health insurance
  • Stipend for modest accommodation and living expenses

Former Fellows’ Opportunities: Alumni are invited to apply for the OHCHR – Former PAD Fellows partnership, supporting events promoting human rights of people of African descent and combating racism.
