Date: April 15, 2024. The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), founded in 1988, stands as a beacon of economic empowerment across the African continent. As a public not-for-profit organization, AERC is committed to the advancement of economic policy research and training in Africa. Its strategic intent is deeply rooted in the belief that sustained development in sub-Saharan Africa necessitates the presence of well-trained, locally based professional economists. Through its initiatives, AERC aims to catalyze capacity building in economic policy, particularly in Francophone and Anglophone African countries, by providing support in policy research and graduate training.

In line with its mission, AERC is thrilled to announce the commencement of the 2024/2025 Ph.D. scholarships. These scholarships are designed for applicants from both Francophone and Anglophone sub-Saharan African countries who are admitted into any of the esteemed AERC Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP) in Economics degree-awarding universities.
The participating universities include:

- University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin
- University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
- University of Benin, Nigeria
- Félix Houphouet-Boigny University, Côte d’Ivoire
- University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal
- University of Ibadan, Nigeria
- University of Nairobi, Kenya
- University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon
- University of Pretoria
- University of Witwatersrand, South Africa
Qualifications and Requirements:
To qualify for this prestigious opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Successful application and admission to any one of the CPP universities mentioned above.
- Attainment of at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a related field from an accredited university.
- Possession of a Master’s degree (with coursework and thesis component) in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or related fields from a recognized University. The coursework should encompass microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and econometrics.
- Desirable possession of at least one relevant publication in a refereed journal.
- Demonstrated engagement in economic management, research, and/or training in the public sector will be considered an added advantage.
- Female and applicants from post-conflict and fragile states are especially encouraged to apply.
Application Process:
Interested applicants are required to submit their applications for admission directly to the respective universities. Detailed application procedures can be obtained from the official websites of the respective universities. Upon receiving an admission letter from one of the CPP universities, applicants are then required to upload the following documents onto the AERC scholarship portal here:
- Application cover letter outlining the candidate’s motivations and aspirations.
- Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae highlighting academic achievements, professional experiences, and research interests.
- Evidence of admission to any of the universities listed above.
- Certified copies of transcripts and certificates attesting to academic qualifications.
Deadline: The deadline for applying for the scholarship is August 31, 2024.
