As we commemorate this historic milestone, we are proud to launch the British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowships, a flagship initiative aimed at supporting early-career scholars from Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipient countries.

The British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowships offer a transformative opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to engage in cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge exchange. We are delighted to award two 12-month fellowships, commencing in January 2025, to exceptional scholars who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and social impact.

Fellows selected for this prestigious program will have the unique privilege of spending ten months at the renowned Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), located within the historic University of Edinburgh. Here, they will join a vibrant community of scholars, artists, and intellectuals, gaining access to world-class resources, mentorship, and academic support.

Investing in Research Excellence:

Each fellowship includes a bursary of £2,500 per month, as well as funding for travel expenses, research materials, and professional development opportunities. Fellows will also receive dedicated desk space, library access, and guidance from leading experts in their field, empowering them to pursue innovative research projects and make meaningful contributions to their academic disciplines.

Eligibility Criteria for the British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowships:

  1. Early-Career Status: These fellowships are specifically designed for early-career researchers, defined as individuals who are within seven years of completing their PhD. We welcome applications from promising scholars who are embarking on their postdoctoral journey and seeking opportunities for professional development and academic advancement.
  2. Nationality and Location: Applicants must be based in an Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipient country where the British Council operates. The list of eligible countries includes Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Yemen, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
  3. Postdoctoral Qualifications: Applicants should possess the necessary qualifications and expertise to undertake postdoctoral level research during the fellowship period. We seek candidates who have demonstrated excellence in their academic pursuits and are capable of conducting rigorous and impactful research projects.

Assessment Criteria:

The selection process for the British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowships will be guided by the following criteria:

  1. Relevant Background: Candidates should have a research and/or professional background that aligns with the broad thematic remit of the fellowship programme. This may include experience in areas such as international relations, cultural diplomacy, education, arts, and English language studies.
  2. Research Proposal: Applicants are required to submit a research proposal that clearly articulates how their project will contribute to the objectives of the British Council’s programme. Selection Process:

Applications will be reviewed by an assessment panel comprised of representatives from the University of Edinburgh and the British Council. The panel will assess each application based on the alignment with the eligibility criteria and the extent to which candidates meet the assessment criteria outlined above.
