Introduction:
Mentorship Building Beyond offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of public spaces and communities within African cities. The program recognizes the dynamic nature of urban environments, where intersections of people, objects, and identities shape the fabric of society. With increasing urbanization and modernization pressures, there’s a need to reimagine city spaces and question the narratives and representations embedded within them.
Program Overview:
Building Beyond is a learning structure designed for experienced artists and cultural practitioners with 7-15 years of relevant professional experience. Participants engage in reflective practice, activate their work within local contexts, and collectively explore ideas across the continent. Supported by mentors, the program fosters conversation, collaboration, and exchange, aiming to shape resilient, humane, and creative urban environments.

- Peer Group Sessions: Interactive online sessions facilitate dialogue and collaboration among participants.
- Guest Speaker Sessions: Experts share insights and perspectives on relevant topics.
- Lab Weeks: Two in-person gatherings, one in Africa and one in the Netherlands, provide intensive mentoring and networking opportunities.
- Group Projects: Participants collaborate on public-facing events and a collective publication.
- Award: Each participant receives €10,000 and mentorship to develop a body of work aligned with their application concept.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nationality: Applicants must be from and reside in eligible African countries listed.
- Professional Experience: 7-15 years of relevant experience in arts, culture, architecture, design, or related fields.
- Language: Proficiency in English is required due to the program’s communication language.

How to Apply:
- Create an Account: Visit the Prince Claus Awards Platform and create an account to start your application for the Mentorship Award: Building Beyond.
- Complete Application: Fill in all required fields and attachments, including questions about your involvement in the mentorship program, your practice, and the concept outline of your work to be developed within the mentorship. Attach a portfolio of previous work, your CV and references, and a pitch video.
- Save and Review: You can work on and make changes to your application up until the deadline. Save your progress as you go. Once submitted, you cannot make amendments, so review your application carefully before submission.
- Confirmation: After submitting your application, you should receive an automatic email confirmation. Ensure you receive this confirmation to verify your submission.
- Deadline: The deadline for applications is 14 May 2024, 17:00 Amsterdam time. Apply well before the deadline to avoid any technical issues.
Selection Process:
Phase 1: Intake and Evaluation of Applications
- The Programme Committee of the Prince Claus Fund and the Creative Industries Fund NL evaluate all eligible applications based on the selection criteria outlined below. A short-list of the most eligible applications is created.
Phase 2: External Evaluations
- Short-listed applications are assessed by external advisors who are experts in the thematic focus of the call. References provided by the applicants are also contacted.
Phase 3: Decision Making
- The Programme Committee makes the final selection of award recipients based on the outcomes of the external assessments. Special attention is paid to diversity, geographical spread, focus of work, level of engagement with the subject matter, and quality of practice.
Phase 4: Contracting and Communications
- Successful applicants are notified about the award and participation in the program. A contract is drafted and signed by the applicant and the Prince Claus Fund, detailing the award amount, reporting requirements, program schedule, and other provisions.
Announcement:
- All applicants are informed of the outcome of their application by the end of October 2024 at the latest. Award recipients are announced on the Prince Claus Fund and the Creative Industries NL’s online channels.

- Originality: The work is innovative and artistically interesting.
- Transformative: The work engages with pressing social and political issues, aiming to create lasting change.
- Context-Specific: The work is important in and relevant to the local context.
- Inclusive: The work connects people in ways that resist marginalization, oppression, and division.
- Impactful: The award will make a real difference to the professional development and impact of the individual’s practice.
- Potential to Accelerate: The individual has the potential to become a leader in the field, focusing on relevant social issues within their context.
