Apply today for the ESIMSAD MSc and PhD Scholarships 2024. The scheme which is a collaborative effort between the African Union and the European Union, operates under the Pan-African Partnership. Administered by the European Commission’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, with oversight from the Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development and in cooperation with the African Union Commission Department for Human Resources, Science, and Technology, the program aims to bolster human capital development in Africa while fostering intra-African cooperation in line with Agenda 2063.
The program has several specific objectives, including:
- Enhancing Employability: By facilitating academic mobility and skill development, the program aims to increase the employability of participating students.
- Improving Higher Education Quality: Through capacity-building initiatives and knowledge transfer, the program seeks to enhance the quality of higher education in Africa and align it with the continent’s development goals.
- Modernizing and Internationalizing Institutions: The program aims to modernize and internationalize African higher education institutions, making them more competitive and relevant in a global context.
- Fostering a Unified Higher Education and Research Space: By promoting collaboration and exchange among African institutions, the program contributes to the development of a cohesive African higher education and research space.

Step 1: Eligibility Check
1.1 Target Group Classification:
- Target Group 1 (TG1): African nationals and/or residents registered or having obtained a degree in one of the Higher Education Institutions that is a member of the ESIMSAD project partners.
- Target Group 2 (TG2): African nationals and residents (students) registered in Higher Education Institutions of African countries not included in the partnership, or those who have obtained a Higher Education Institution degree or equivalent from an institution of these countries.

1.2 Who Can Apply?
- Each student target group has specific eligibility criteria based on nationality, residence, and educational background.
- Eligible countries for TG2 are categorized by region: Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western Africa.
1.3 Types and Level of Mobility:
- Available scholarships cover master’s, doctoral, and staff mobility, each with its own set of allowances and requirements.
1.4 Scholarship Inclusions:
- The scholarship covers various expenses such as roundtrip flight tickets, participation costs, travel insurance, monthly subsistence allowance, settling-in allowance, and research costs.

ESIMSAD Master’s Programs:
- MSc in Materials Science (Hosted by AAU, Ethiopia)
- Duration: Two years, with the first year dedicated to coursework and the second year to research.
- Core subjects cover various aspects of materials science, with elective courses available in specialized areas.
- MSc in Materials Electrochemistry and Energy Technologies (Hosted by WITS, South Africa)
- Structure: Research-only program focusing on electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems, and electrochemical sensors.
- MSc in Solar Energy Physics/Materials Science (Hosted by UNN, Nigeria)
- Duration: Two years, combining coursework in solar energy-related topics with independent research.
ESIMSAD PhD Programs:
- PhD in Materials Science (Hosted by AAU, Ethiopia)
- Structure: Two years of coursework and seminars followed by doctoral dissertation research.
- PhD in Materials Electrochemistry and Energy Technologies (Hosted by WITS, South Africa)
- Focus: Research-oriented program exploring electrochemical energy systems and sensors.
- PhD in Materials Science/Solar Energy Physics (Hosted by UNN, Nigeria)
- Duration: Four years, with initial coursework followed by independent research and thesis submission.
- PhD in Physical Chemistry (Hosted by AASTU, Ethiopia and CU, Egypt)
- Requirements: Completion of coursework, publication of research articles, and thesis defense.
