About Junior Fellows Internship Programme in the Office of the Rector
The Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the UNU Office of the Rector offers a unique opportunity for highly qualified individuals to work as Junior Fellows at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo. Through a competitive application process conducted twice per year, graduate students passionate about the work of the United Nations, particularly UNU, are encouraged to apply.
Purpose
The Junior Fellows Internship Programme aims to:
- Foster interaction and dialogue among young scholars, professionals, and UNU
- Familiarize Junior Fellows with the activities of the Office of the Rector and UNU
- Provide hands-on experience in a UN agency for young professionals
- Expose participants to administrative working environments
- Support activities within the Office of the Rector
Working Conditions
Junior Fellows are selected twice per year for terms that run parallel to university semesters. The fall term spans mid-August to mid-December, while the spring term spans mid-February to mid-June. Work primarily occurs on-site at UNU headquarters in Tokyo, with some flexibility for remote work. For the Fall 2024 term, applicants located both in Japan and overseas will be considered, regardless of their current location.
Junior Fellows work full time during regular university hours, Monday to Friday, with weekends and official UNU holidays off. Additionally, Junior Fellows are entitled to 1.5 days of leave per month. Those working on-site are provided with office space and facilities, while those working remotely are expected to have access to necessary equipment. Junior Fellows receive a monthly stipend to cover living costs and transportation to and from UNU headquarters.

Responsibilities
Junior Fellows support the work of the Office of the Rector in various areas, including:
- Administrative research and writing
- Planning and project management
- Event coordination (in-person and online)
- Meeting coordination and minute taking
- Editorial support
- Communication tasks
Qualifications
Candidates for the Junior Fellows Internship Programme should meet the following qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed postgraduate studies (within two years of application)
- Under 32 years of age at the time of application
- Less than five years of work experience in a related field
- Native or fluent command of written and spoken English
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills
- Ability to establish effective working relations with diverse backgrounds
- Resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving
- Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications
