Budget Guidelines and Language Study
Boren Scholarships and Fellowship funding are intended to cover the majority of an awardee’s overseas expenses but are not all-inclusive. Applicants and awardees should utilize the provided Boren budget template to compile overseas program costs. For detailed budget guidelines, applicants can refer to the official Boren Awards website.
Intensive Language Study:
- All Boren Awards-funded programs must prioritize language study throughout the grant period.
- Applicants are encouraged to select or design programs offering immersive language environments in and out of the classroom.
- Boren Scholars should seek programs with a significant language component, focusing on language study both in and outside of coursework.
- Boren Fellows must include a serious language component in their proposals. Traditional language programs are acceptable, and additional activities like research or internships conducted in the target language may be incorporated.
- There is no minimum proficiency requirement for most languages. Applicants should choose programs appropriate to their proficiency level and set realistic goals for improvement.
- Languages should be studied in countries where they are spoken by a significant portion of the population.
- In exceptional cases, Boren Awards may support the study of non-preferred languages indigenous to preferred countries, but applicants must justify the relevance to U.S. national security and public service.
