The Gilman Global Scholarship Program, instituted by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, presents opportunities for undergraduate study abroad endeavors. This scholarship specifically targets US undergraduate students enrolled in two-year or four-year colleges or universities and receiving Federal Pell Grant funding. It aims to facilitate their participation in study and intern abroad programs across the globe.
Crafting Your Global Scholarship Program Essays
Before diving into your essay drafts for the Gilman Scholarship application, we advise taking a moment to familiarize yourself with the writing tips shared during our informational sessions, whether attended live or watched later on recording. In addition to the support offered by campus writing centers, the Learning Abroad Center extends an opportunity for individualized essay feedback from UofM advisors who have experience as Gilman scholarship reviewers. This exclusive service is reserved for those who have participated in our info sessions or watched the recordings. Reviewers will expect applicants to incorporate the provided writing tips into their essay drafts. To request feedback on your Gilman essay, simply email your draft to Thuy Doan at thuydoan@umn.edu, who will ensure it reaches one of our skilled reviewers. Please note that drafts submitted less than 5 business days before the application deadline cannot be accommodated.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Gilman Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a US citizen in good academic standing.
- Demonstrate receipt of a Federal Pell Grant or provide evidence of pending receipt at the time of application or during the term of study abroad.
- Apply to or have been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit at a US accredited institution of higher education.
- Study in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System.

Selection Criteria
The Gilman Scholarship Program seeks to support a diverse array of students, particularly those who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, such as:
- Students with significant financial need.
- Students pursuing studies in non-traditional countries, especially those outside Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
- Students from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
- Students enrolled in a variety of institutions, including four-year colleges, public and private universities, community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and other Minority Serving Institutions.
- Students with disabilities.

Deadlines for the Gilman Scholarship Program vary depending on the term of study or internship, including spring, summer, fall, or academic year terms. For the Fall term of 2024, the application deadline is October 5, 2023. Specific dates and timelines for each term can be found on the program’s website.

Award Amounts:
This academic year, the Gilman Scholarship Program is set to distribute over 3,200 scholarships, each valued at up to $5,000, to support undergraduate US citizens in their study abroad endeavors. Additionally, students who apply for the Critical Need Language award may be eligible for an additional $3,000. The actual award amounts are contingent upon the duration of the program and the financial need of the student. On average, students enrolled in semester-long programs receive approximately $4,000, while those participating in short-term programs typically receive around $2,500.
How to Submit Your Application:
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Application consists of two essential components:
- The online application, which includes the submission of official transcripts.
- Online certifications from both the applicant’s study abroad and financial aid advisers. At UofM, these advisers are distinct individuals from separate offices.
Both components must be completed within the designated student and adviser deadlines for the application to be considered. Late or incomplete submissions will not be reviewed, and extensions cannot be accommodated.
