Unlock Funding for Climate Action Research: Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) 2024

Join the Global Development Awards Competition 2024 and vie for The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) 2024! This competitive research grant program seeks to identify and support exceptional research proposals from low- or middle-income countries, focusing on sustainable climate action for human-centered development.

In the 2024 edition, three winning projects will be awarded grants totaling US$ 60,000. These grants will be bestowed upon researchers whose proposals show the greatest potential for advancing our understanding of development issues and presenting clear, well-researched policy implications to address relevant developmental challenges.

The first prize winner will receive a grant of US$ 30,000, while the second and third prize winners will be awarded US$ 20,000 and US$ 10,000 respectively. Alongside financial support, awardees will benefit from mentorship by esteemed academics in their field, serving as Scientific and Technical Advisors.

Eligibility Criteria:

Geographical Scope: The MIDP competition is open to countries classified by the World Bank as low-income or middle-income countries.

World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF): Projects must comply with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) and the Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs). Refer to the Annex at the end of this call for the exclusion list of ineligible activities.

NGO Registration: Projects must be managed by a registered non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), or Civil Society Organization (CSO) headquartered in one of the eligible countries.

Project Implementation: Projects must have commenced implementation on or before June 1, 2023, to be eligible. Applicants must demonstrate a track record of activities during the review stage, as the competition does not fund ideas or pilot initiatives.

Submissions: Submissions related to recently initiated projects, project ideas, feasibility studies, or baseline studies will not be considered. Additionally, proposals for funding conferences, either partially or fully, will not be accepted.

How to Apply:

To apply for the Global Development Awards Competition, ensure you meet the following prerequisites:

  1. Non-profit status: Provide an official document certifying the registration of your non-profit NGO/CSO. If the document is not in English, include a translation (noncertified is acceptable).
  2. Ability to receive funds from abroad: Obtain an official document certifying your organization’s legal capacity to receive funds from abroad according to your national legal framework. For example, if based in India, ensure FCRA registration and compliance.
  3. Budget from previous year: Upload the budget/financial report of the project from 2023 to validate its track record and implementation history.
  4. Proof of ongoing project: Be prepared to provide evidence to the Reviewers that the project is ongoing, extending beyond the budget from 2023.
  5. Prompt response to GDN/Reviewers: Ensure timely compliance with any requests from GDN/Reviewers throughout the application process. Failure to do so may result in exclusion from consideration.
