Objective:

The overarching goal of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

  • Attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, fostering a diverse pool of researchers.
  • Cultivate leadership potential among recipients, preparing them to become the research leaders of tomorrow.

Scope:

Each year, the program awards 70 fellowships, with approximately 140 active awards at any given time. These fellowships are equally distributed among three major Canadian research councils: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Value: Successful applicants receive funding of $70,000 per year, which is taxable.

Duration: The fellowship is awarded for a non-renewable period of two years.

Timelines: The application process unfolds as follows:

  • April to September 2024: Applicants seek endorsement from their host institution, prepare, and submit their application. Institutions may have internal deadlines.
  • September 17, 2024, 20:00 EDT: Deadline for complete application submission.
  • October to December 2024: Evaluation of applications.
  • Mid-February 2025: Anticipated notification of results. Applicants will be notified via email when the results are available on ResearchNet.
  • April to October 2025: Payments to successful applicants commence.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign citizens are eligible to apply under the following conditions:
    • Non-Canadian citizens or permanent residents must conduct their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution.
    • Canadian citizens or permanent residents who earned their PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a foreign university must conduct their fellowship at a Canadian institution.
    • Canadian citizens or permanent residents who earned their PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a Canadian university may hold their fellowship at a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.

Eligibility Window for Degree Completion:

  • Applicants for the 2024-25 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships must meet all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree between September 15, 2021, and September 30, 2025.
  • Proof of degree completion must be submitted no later than October 15, 2025, for applicants who have not fulfilled all requirements at the time of application.
  • For applicants with multiple degrees, the eligibility window applies to the most recent degree.

Host Institution Eligibility:

  • Eligible institutions to host Banting postdoctoral researchers include Canadian and foreign universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges, and not-for-profit organizations with robust research mandates and capacities.
  • Canadian governments (federal, provincial, municipal) and for-profit organizations are not eligible to serve as host institutions.
